Château de Chambord Weather: When to Go, Month by Month
The weather here decides more than your comfort. It decides whether the jetty is open, whether the show is on, whether the forest tours run in the afternoon and how long the château stays open. Here is what each month does to a visit, and which Loire château tours that include Chambord suit which season.
What the weather does to a visit here
Chambord is a château in the middle of 5,440 hectares of park, and most of what you can do there happens outdoors. Three things move with the calendar.
The hours change. The château opens 9:00 to 18:00 from late March to late October and 9:00 to 17:00 the rest of the year, with last entry half an hour before closing. The estate’s season changes. The horse show and the jetty’s boats, bikes and cars run only from 4 April to 1 November. Summer heat changes the forest. Until the end of August the 4×4 drives go in the morning only, because the guides patrol for fire in the afternoon.
Chambord month by month
The temperatures below are the 1991–2020 averages for Blois, 25 minutes away and the nearest town with published records.
January
Highs average about 7 °C and lows about 2 °C, with rain on ten days in a typical month. The château keeps low-season hours of 9:00 to 17:00, and in 2026 it closed on four January Mondays. The rooms are cold, so wear your coat inside. You get the quietest staircase of the year.
February
The coldest nights of the year, averaging 1.5 °C, and about 93 hours of sunshine in the month. Hours stay at 9:00 to 17:00, and the school holidays bring the one busy week. Park walks are muddy but open. Choose a dry morning and you will have the terraces almost to yourself.
March
Highs climb to about 13 °C, and on 28 March the château switches to its long hours, 9:00 to 18:00. In 2026 three March Mondays were closed before that. The gardens are still bare, so come for the rooms. Late in the month you gain an extra hour every afternoon.
April
The horse show opens on 4 April, and the jetty starts hiring punts, bikes and electric cars the same day. Highs reach about 16 °C with nine wet days in the month. Easter fills the car parks, so arrive at nine. It is the first month you can make a full day of the estate.
May
Highs near 20 °C and more than 200 hours of sunshine make May one of the best months to come. The show adds an afternoon performance on bank-holiday weekends. The forest is in full leaf along the canal circuit. Book a weekday if you want space on the terraces.
June
Highs of about 24 °C and only eight wet days in the month. The château runs 9:00 to 18:00, and the gardens are at their greenest. In 2026 the Chambord Live concerts closed the roads from 13:00 on 26 to 28 June, so check the calendar for next year’s dates.
July
The warmest month, with highs around 26 °C and records above 40 °C. The horse show runs twice daily, and the official English tour runs at 11:15. Forest 4×4 drives go in the morning only because of fire risk. Visit the rooms at midday and walk the park early or late.
August
As warm as July, with the fewest wet days of the year, about seven. Everything is running: the show twice a day, the English tour, the jetty and the morning 4×4 drives. The car parks fill by late morning. You get the most out of it by arriving at opening time.
September
Highs fall to about 22 °C and the crowds thin once school starts. From mid-September the stags begin their autumn bellowing in the forest. On 26 September the Festins de Chambord exhibition opens, and the main horse-show season ends on the 27th. For many visitors this is the month to choose.
October
Highs of about 17 °C and ten wet days. The stag bellowing runs until mid-month, and the horse show returns from 17 October at 11:45 and 15:00. On 26 October the château drops back to 9:00 to 17:00. Bring waterproofs for the park and a jumper for the rooms.
November
Highs near 11 °C, eleven wet days and the shortest crowds before Christmas. The horse show and the jetty close on 1 November. Christmas at Chambord opens on 28 November with a Gargantua theme. It is the month for the rooms and the exhibition rather than the park.
December
The darkest month, with about 59 hours of sunshine and highs near 8 °C. The Christmas programme runs all month, and from 19 December the château opens until 18:00, closing at 16:00 on 24 and 31 December. It shuts on Christmas Day. Dress for cold rooms and you will enjoy it.

Rain days count the days with at least a millimetre. The driest stretch, July to September, is also the sunniest, which is when the gardens and the park earn their place in your day.
The seasons, and which one you want

If you can choose freely, pick September or early October. The long hours still apply, the show still runs, the stags are calling and the new exhibition has opened.
Best time of day
Arrive at 9:00. The first hour is the quietest in the rooms and on the staircase, and in summer it is the coolest part of the day for the gardens. Tour coaches from Paris reach Chambord mid-morning, after a two-hour drive.
Late afternoon is the other good answer. The light on the facade across the canal is at its best then, and the château stays open until 18:00 in the main season, so time your last half-hour for the terraces.

The tours from Tours and Amboise give Chambord up to two hours, and the guided visit at the château fits whenever you arrive.
Heat, and the forest in summer
July and August average around 26 °C, and the records top 40 °C. The stone rooms stay cooler than the gardens, so put the château in the middle of the day and the park at either end. Carry water: the walk from the car parks is 600 to 850 metres.
The forest is at its most fragile then. That is why the 4×4 drives run only in the morning until 31 August. Book the first departure, at 8:00, for the best chance of deer.
A wet day at Chambord
Rain costs you the gardens and the park, not the château. Start with the 20-minute film on the ground floor, take the HistoPad round all three floors, and give the second-floor vaults and the exhibition your time. If you have children with you, the logis des enfants on the second floor is indoors and free with your ticket.
Lunch at Le Café d’Orléans inside, and save the canal for the first dry hour. The horse show still runs in the rain, because the stands are covered.
What to wear
Take a layer more than the weather outside needs, in every season. The estate’s own advice for autumn and winter is to dress warmly for the visit itself, and reviewers who came in December say the same about the rooms. Wear shoes you can climb in: the staircase and the terraces are all steps. In the park after rain, the paths are sand and clay.
