Château de Chambord Accessibility: Wheelchairs, Step-Free Routes and Help

The ground floor, the gardens and the courtyard are step-free, the upper floors are not, and a disabled visitor and one companion get in free. Here is what the estate provides, what the HistoPad does about the stairs, and which of the private tours of the Château de Chambord state that they can take a wheelchair.

What is step-free, and what is not

A ramp takes you into the ground floor of the keep, and the paved courtyard and contrasting paths lead you to it from the car parks. On the ground floor you can reach the rooms, the audiovisual room with its 20-minute film, Le Café d’Orléans, the toilets and the gift shop.

The French formal gardens are accessible too. The upper floors, the vaults and the terraces are reached by stairs, including the double helix staircase itself, and there is no lift.

Free entry for you and a companion

A visitor with a disability gets in free, and so does one person with them, for the château and the gardens. You can move freely between the two. Parking is free as well when you show your parking ticket and your proof at the desk.

The HistoPad version for reduced mobility

The HistoPad has a version built for visitors who cannot climb: it lets you explore every stage of the visit, including the upper floors, from the ground floor. There is also a mode for visitors with impaired sight, with larger, clearer text. The standard HistoPad costs €6.50; ask at the desk for the adapted version.

Loans, carts, parking and toilets

Wheelchairs and seat sticks are lent free, subject to availability, at the ticket office or the château reception. Electric carts can be hired to get round the surroundings of the château, though not in the gardens. Assistance dogs are admitted inside the monument, the gardens and the stables. Canes, crutches and seat sticks with rubber tips are allowed inside; hiking poles are not.

Every car park has spaces reserved for disabled visitors, for cars, campervans and coaches, and they are free with proof. Adapted toilets are on Place Saint-Louis and in the château courtyard. The estate can arrange adapted guided visits, tactile models and relief maps for groups if you book ahead.

Which tours work with a wheelchair

Each operator states its own accessibility on its listing. The table repeats what they say and nothing more. Only one product states that it is wheelchair accessible; the private walking tour at the château also states step-free surfaces and transport.

If a tour does not suit, the château is reachable on your own: the Rémi shuttle from Blois station and a taxi from Blois both run to the door, and the car parks have reserved spaces. The map page sets out the distances.
